Specialized Testing

SIBO

Breath test for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

What this test is used for

  • Chronic bloating, especially right after eating
  • Unexplained gas or irregular bowel movements
  • Digestive symptoms that haven't responded to typical treatment
  • Suspected bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine

What to expect

SIBO testing is a breath test, not a blood or stool test. You'll drink a prepared solution, then breathe into collection tubes at set intervals over a few hours, either at home with a kit or during a visit. The test measures hydrogen and methane gas produced by bacteria in your small intestine, which shouldn't be there in large amounts. Your provider will review the pattern and, if positive, build a targeted treatment plan.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to come in for an in-person visit?

No. Testing is coordinated through an at-home kit or a local lab draw, and your results are reviewed with you over a follow-up video visit.

How soon can I be seen?

Once your test is ordered, most kits ship within a few business days, and your provider will schedule a follow-up once results are in.

How long does the breath test take?

Plan for about two to three hours, since you'll provide breath samples at set intervals after drinking the test solution.
